OutOfWorkChicago is a resource and social networking group for job seekers in Chicago coping with the economy and founded by two out-of-work Chicagoans.
The organization was conceived by Patrick Iwanicki and Erik Jensen because of how frustrated, isolated, frightened and alone they felt while searching for jobs. Both had been laid off from white collar tech jobs and they met while taking a course to prepare for a project management certificate.
With very little attention they drew 200 people to their first event in February and had their first job placement -- almost before the gathering was over. They topped closed in on 300 at their third event in April and topped that despite a driving rain storm in May.
OWC combines web-based resources for job seekers to get advice, share their experiences and search for employment with networking events where they meet with recruiters and enjoy the company of other people in the same situation over cocktails and appetizers in a friendly environment.
