June 30: Midday Fix - Tips for Preventing Sports Injuries From Dr. Preston Wolin
There are three rules all weekend warriors should follow to minimize injury no matter the sport:

Get in shape before the season starts

Weekend warriors often go to the first practice completely out of shape. As a result, these athletes end up injured early in the season.

Understand the difference between soreness and pain.
Sore muscles are inevitable when we exercise, so work through it and keep up your activity level. Pain in your joints or muscles can indicate an injury and means you need to stop and see a doctor.

Seek a sports medicine physician when injured.
Sports medicine specialists work to get you back in the game and keep you there instead of insisting you sit out the season.

Here are some statistics on the number of people injured in some of the more popular summer sports:

Baseball: There are around 160,000 baseball injuries per year, a significant number of which are related to the shoulder of pitchers and catchers.

Golf: Each year there are about 47,000 sports injuries related to golf. Elbows tend to be the area of concern for golfers.

Soccer: There are about 175,000 soccer related sports injuries per year, most of which are concentrated on the knee area.

Minimally invasive procedures and other innovative treatments in sports medicine are keeping more amateur athletes in the game.
