MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (AP) — Authorities in Mount Vernon have exhumed the body of a man shot to death earlier this month, thinking it may yield additional evidence against the accused suspect.
Jefferson County State's Attorney Jeff Bradley says Thursday's exhumation of Jimmie Davis came with the blessings of the victim's family.
Davis was 26 when he was shot Oct. 4 while attending a birthday party. He later died at a hospital.
Twenty-four-year-old Robert Lash is charged with first-degree murder and remains jailed on $1 million bond.
Bradley says after the initial autopsy, investigators were led to believe there might be some additional evidence on Davis' body. So Bradley filed a petition this week for the exhumation after Davis' family signed off on it.
