WGN-TV honors outstanding educators with the Teacher of the Month segment
June's Teacher of the Month is Julie Olson. This month, we're opening the door to a classroom at Dore Elementary School in Chicago -- it's filled with determination and patience. Here you'll get a glimpse of what it takes to make a difference in the lives of students with special needs.
When it comes to heart and soul, May's Teacher of the Month is at the top of her class. We're honored to introduce you to Phyllis Adkins -- a seventh and eighth grade math teacher students call an inspiration ... and it's easy to see why. Inside her Englewood classroom at Stagg School the agenda goes far beyond arithmetic. It's where she instills a sense of hope, security and confidence ... lessons Ms. Adkins takes very seriously ... and lessons her students are taking to heart.
April's Teacher of the Month is Andy Sinclair, a drama teacher who is stealing the show at Maine East High School in Park Ridge. Mr. Sinclair is helping students find their voice -- and their passion -- inside his actors' studio. Madeleine Buttitta nominated Mr. Sinclair and credits him for helping her and others overcome their shyness.
March's Teacher of the Month is Yolanda Smith, a seventh and eighth grade teacher at George Rogers Clark Elementary School in Chicago. Patient and persistent ... that's how students describe Ms. Smith. In her classroom, self respect is the golden rule. It's a lesson plan that's unleashed her students' love for learning.
February's Teacher of the Month is Christine Borst of Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park. Ms. Borst is a physics teacher and girls varsity basketball coach who has made mentoring her mission. Senior Kaitlin Drozd nominated Mrs. Borst and noted her committment to her students. "She goes above and beyond to help students, making herself available early in the morning, during her lucnh and after school."
January's Teacher of the Month is Mr. David Levine of Al Raby School in Chicago. Student Tamyra Hickman nominated Levine submitting, "Mr. Levine has high expectations for all students, and his motto is "No Excuses." Every time he reminds us of this it motivates me to not settle for average, but to do my best at all times. He has joined our Spanish teacher for the Salsa Club, he is a part of our Environmental Justice club here at Raby, and he rides a bike to school everyday!"
Teacher of the Month is brought to you by WGN-TV and Sylvan Learning Center.
